How to keep a record of everywhere you've travelled

Simple ways to remember every trip: a map of where you've been, a line for each holiday, and the souvenirs that go with it.

Most people can list the big trips. Ask them which year, or who they went with, or what they brought back, and it gets hazy fast. Keeping a record doesn't need to be a big job.

Start with a map

A map of everywhere you've been is the easiest record there is, and the most satisfying to look at. Start with the trips you remember best and fill in the rest over time.

One line per trip

For each trip, write down three things: the month, who you were with, and one thing you remember. That's enough. Long diaries get abandoned, one line keeps going.

Tie the souvenirs to the trip

A mug or a magnet on a shelf is a souvenir. The same mug with "Barcelona, August 2019, with the girls, the heatwave" next to it is a memory. Link each thing you brought back to the trip it came from.

Keep one photo per trip

Not all 400. Pick the one that sums it up. That single photo is worth more than the folder you'll never scroll through again.

Look back at it

A record is only worth keeping if you see it. A timeline of trips in the order you took them, or a poster of the map on the wall, means it gets looked at.
