What to do with fridge magnets from your travels

Too many travel magnets for the fridge? Ideas for displaying them on boards, frames and maps, and keeping the memory behind each one.

A fridge magnet is the most popular souvenir there is. Small, cheap, and it says exactly where you were. Then one day the fridge door is full and they start falling off every time someone opens it.

A magnetic board on the wall

A large metal noticeboard, or a sheet of steel painted to match the room, turns the collection into a feature. Hang it in the hallway and every visitor ends up reading it.

A world map that magnets stick to

Magnetic world maps let you put each magnet roughly where it came from. Over the years it fills in, and the empty bits become a list of places to go next.

A shadow box frame

For the special ones, a deep frame with a metal backing keeps a handful together. One frame per big trip works well: a magnet, a ticket and a photo.

Inside a cupboard door

A thin metal sheet on the inside of a kitchen cupboard door gives you a private display you see every day. Good if the rest of the house is minimal.

Keep a list, not just the magnets

Write down where each one came from, when, and who you were with. In ten years the magnet will still be there, but the memory of buying it won't be, unless you've kept it somewhere.

Turn your favourite trip into a magnet of its own

The best magnet is often the one you didn't buy: your own photo from the trip. On CollectMyTrip you can log a trip, add your photo, and have it printed as a 4 inch magnet with the place or date along the bottom.

Keep every trip in one place
